Foley

Foley (spr. fōlì), John Henry, engl. Bildhauer, geb. 24. Mai 1818 in Dublin, gest. 27. Aug. 1874 in London, bildete sich an der Dubliner Society of Art und seit 1834 an der Londoner Akademie. Die Gruppe Ino und Bacchus (1840) verschaffte ihm zuerst Ruf; bedeutender jedoch war sein Jüngling an einem Fluß (1844), eine schöne Verbindung antiker Grazie mit einem realistischen Motiv und naturwahrer Form. Seine besten Arbeiten gehören der Porträtskulptur an, so die Statuen von Hampdon und Selden für die neuen Parlamentshäuser, die kolossale Reiterstatue des Lords Hardinge in Kalkutta, die Statuen des Lords Clive in Shrewsbury, Outrams auf dem Waterlooplatz in London, des Lords Herbert am Kriegsministerium daselbst, des Prinzen Albert im Hydepark u. a. Seine Werke wurden herausgegeben von Monkhouse (Lond. 1875).
