Faringdon

Faringdon (spr. färringd'n, Great F.), Marktflecken in Berkshire (England), am obern Ock, alte Residenz der Sachsenkönige, mit alter gotischer Kirche (jetzt restauriert) und (1891) 3133 Einw. 6 km südlich von F., beim Dorf Uffington, erhebt sich der White Horse Hill (272 m), nach der eingegrabenen, 114 m langen Gestalt eines galoppierenden Rosses benannt; auf dem Gipfel eine alte Verschanzung (Uffington Castle), ähnliche in der Nähe (Hardwell Castle und Alfred's Camp).
