Allegheny

Allegheny (spr. älligēni), Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Grafschaft im nordamerik. Staat Pennsylvanien, gegenüber Pittsburg (s. d.), am Zusammenfluß des Alleghany und Monongahela, Bahnknotenpunkt, mit (1900) 129,896 Einw. (vielen Deutschen), drei theologischen Seminaren, Negercollege, Sternwarte, Waisenhaus, Zuchthaus, Unionsarsenal und bedeutender Industrie in Eisen und Bronze, Maschinen, Farben, Leder, Bier etc. (1900: 833 Betriebe mit 20,804 Arbeitern und für 54,1 Mill. Doll. Produkten). Der Wert des steuerpflichtigen Eigentums betrug 1900: 69,032,734, die städtische Schuld 4,137,440 Doll.
