Eliott

Eliott, George Augustus, Lord Heathfield, engl. General, geb. 25. Dez. 1717, gest. 6. Juli 1790, erhielt seine Bildung auf der französischen Ingenieurschule zu La Fère, diente 1735 und 1736 in der preußischen Armee und trat 1739 in die englische Garde ein. 1742–48 diente er in Deutschland, ward bei Dettingen verwundet, wurde 1759 Oberst, kommandierte 1761 beim Angriff auf die französische Küste die Kavallerie, nahm 1762 als Generalmajor an der Eroberung von Havana teil, wurde 1763 Generalleutnant, 1774 kommandierender General in Irland und 1775 Gouverneur von Gibraltar. Hier leistete er den Spaniern und Franzosen, welche die Festung jahrelang zu Wasser und zu Lande belagerten, erfolgreichen Widerstand, bis der Friede von Versailles 1783 der Belagerung ein Ende machte. 1787 wurde er zum Lord Heathfield von Gibraltar ernannt.
