Elder

Elder, 1) Sir Thomas, austral. Großkaufmann und freigebiger Förderer der Erforschung von Süd- und Westaustralien, geb. 1818 in Kirkcaldy (Schottland), gest. 7. März 1897 in Adelaïde (Südaustralien), wanderte 1854 nach Südaustralien aus, betrieb ausgedehnten Wollhandel und machte sich seit 1873 durch Aussendung und Unterstützung zahlreicher Expeditionen, so namentlich der Expedition von Warburton (1873), der Roß-Expedition (1874), der beiden Giles-Expeditionen (1874 und 1875) und der sogen. Elder-Expedition (1891–92), um die Erforschung des unbekannten Innern von Süd- und Westaustralien verdient. Über die letztere vgl. das »Journal of the Elder scientific exploring expedition 1891–1892 under command of D. Lindsay« (Adelaïde 1893).

2) John, Ingenieur, geb. 8. März 1824 in Glasgow, gest. 14. Sept. 1869 in London, hörte in Glasgow Vorlesungen über Maschinenbau, erlernte die Praxis in der Mühlenbauanstalt von Napier, leitete dann drei Jahre das technische Bureau der Fabrik und wurde 1852 Teilhaber der Firma Randolph, Eliot u. Komp., die 1860 den Bau eiserner Schiffe begann. Damals erregte die Compoundmaschine allgemeines fachmännisches Interesse, und E., der ihren Wert erkannte und als einer der ersten darauf aufmerksam machte, daß diese Maschine eine Erhöhung der Dampfspannung und der Expansion über das bisher übliche Maß erheische, wenn sie ihre größte Leistungsfähigkeit entfalten sollte, benutzte sie mit größtem Vorteil auf den von seiner Firma erbauten Dampfschiffen. Er erzielte besonders eine sehr bedeutende Brennstoffersparnis und gelangte zu einem Bedarf von 0,9–1,1 kg Kohle für die Stunde und Pferdekraft. Bei einer 1865 von der Regierung angeordneten Konkurrenz hatten Elders dreizylindrische Compoundmaschinen den geringsten Kohlenverbrauch und die geringsten Reibungsverluste. 1869 wurde er zum Präsidenten des Instituts für Ingenieure und Schiffsbauer in Glasgow erwählt.
