Dagon

Dagon, eine Hauptgottheit der Philister, verehrt in Gaza, Asdod und anderwärts (mehrere Ortschaften heißen Beth-Dagon). Den Dagontempel in Gaza riß Simson ein, den in Asdod verbrannte zur Makkabäerzeit Jonathan (1. Makk. 10,83ff.; 11,4). Daß D. von den Philistern unter fischähnlicher Gestalt, nämlich mit einem Fischleib, aber Händen und Kopf eines Menschen, verehrt wurde, steht fest (vgl. 1. Sam. 5,4), doch mag diese Darstellungsweise, vielleicht mitveranlaßt durch hebräisch dag, d. h. Fisch, spezifisch aramäisch-philistäisch sein, analog jener der Göttin Derketo (s.d.). Für Babylonien-Assyrien, wo ein Gott Dagan ebenfalls große Verehrung genoß, läßt sich fischähnliche Darstellung des Gottes nicht erweisen, wenn man D. nicht mit Oannes (s.d.) irrig verwechselt.
