Coventry (spr. kóww'ntrī), 1) Stadt (municipal borough) und Grafschaft (12,5 qkm) im Innern Englands, am Flusse Sherbourne, ist eng und winkelig gebaut, hat 20 Kirchen (darunter die 1133 gegründete und 1888 restaurierte St. Michaelskirche mit 92 m hohem Turm und die Dreieinigkeitskirche mit 72 m hohem Turm), die Ruinen einer 1041 gegründeten Benediktinerabtei und ein Rathaus aus dem 15. Jahrh. Die Bevölkerung zählt (1901) 69,877 Einw., die Fabrikation von Fahrrädern, Kunstgußwaren, Seidenband und Uhren betreiben. Es bestehen eine alte Lateinschule, mehrere Stiftungs- und eine Gewerbeschule. Die Sage von der Lady Godiva (s.d.) wird jährlich durch einen Umzug gefeiert. C. gehörte bis 1888 zu Warwickshire. – 2) Stadt im nordamerikan. Staat Rhode-Island, Grafschaft Kent, an einem Nebenfluß des Gawbuxet, mit Baumwollfabriken und (1900) 5279 Einw.
