Citrāl (Geranial) C10H16O, ein Aldehyd, der sich im Zitronenöl, Lemongrasöl (70–80 Proz.), im Pomeranzenöl, im westindischen Limettöl, im Melissenöl, Bay- und Pimentöl, im japanischen Pfefferöl, im Sassafrasblätteröl und im Öl von Eucalyptus Staigeriana findet. Er entsteht bei Oxydation von Geraniol und Linalool und bei Destillation von geraniumsaurem Kalk mit ameisensaurem Kalk. Er bildet eine schwach gelbliche, optisch inaktive Flüssigkeit, riecht durchdringend zitronenartig, siedet bei 228°, ist sehr empfindlich gegen Säuren, wird auch durch Alkalien angegriffen, gibt bei gelinder Oxydation Geraniumsäure,

bei stärkerer Methylheptenon, dann Aceton und Lävulinsäure. Durch Kondensation mit Aceton entsteht Pseudoionon C13H20O, das leicht in das dem Iron des Irisöls isomere Jonon übergeht, welches wie jenes nach Veilchen riecht.
