Catanzaro

Catanzaro, Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen ital. Provinz (s. oben), auf einer Anhöhe, 9 km vom Golf von Squillace, an der Eisenbahn S. Eufemia-C. Marina (dem Hafenplatz der Stadt), hat Ruinen eines von Robert Guiscard gegründeten Schlosses (mit herrlicher Aussicht), ein technisches Institut, ein Lyzeum, eine technische und eine Ackerbauschule, ein Seminar, eine wissenschaftliche Akademie, ein Kunst- und Altertumsmuseum, ein Theater, Seidenindustrie, Handel mit Wein, Käse, Seide und Öl und (1901) ca. 22,000 (als Gemeinde 31,824) Einw. Die Stadt ist Sitz des Präfekten, eines Bischofs, eines Appellhofs und eines deutschen Vizekonsuls. Sie wurde 963 von Nikephoros Phokas zum Schutz gegen die Sarazenen angelegt.
