Bury (spr. berri), 1) Charlotte Suzanne Marie, engl. Schriftstellerin, geb. 21. Juni 1775, gest. 1. April 1861, Tochter des Herzogs von Argyll, war zuerst mit ihrem Vetter, Oberst Campbell, vermählt, darauf Hofdame der Herzogin von Wales, über deren Privatleben sie später im »Diary illustrative of the times of George IV.« (Lond. 1838, 2 Bde.) skandalöse Mitteilungen machte, und heiratete 1818 in zweiter Ehe den Geistlichen Edward B. Ihre zahlreichen Romane, wie »A marriage in high life« (1836), »The divorced« (1837), »Love« (neue Ausg. 1860), »Family records« (1841) etc., waren dem high life entnommen und ohne tiefern Wert.

2) John Bagnal, engl. Historiker, geb. 16. Okt. 1861 zu Monaghan in Irland, studierte in Dublin und Göttingen und wurde am Trinity College in Dublin angestellt. Außer Aufsätzen zu Bezzenbergers »Beiträgen zur Kunde der indogermanischen Sprachen«, zur »English Historical Review«, zur »Classical Review« u. a. schrieb er die beifällig aufgenommene »History of the later Roman empire from Arcadius to Irene« (1889, 2 Bde., mit einer Abhandlung über die byzantinische Kunst von seiner Gattin) und »History of the Roman empire« (1893), »History of Greece« (1900). Auch veröffentlichte er eine Ausgabe von Pindars isthmischen Oden mit Kommentar (1892).
