Burnside (spr. börnßaid'), Ambrosius Everett, nordamerikan. General, geb. 23. Mai 1824 in Liberty (Indiana), gest. 13. Sept. 1881 in Bristol (Rhode-Island), ward 1847 Artillerieoffizier. Nach der ersten Schlacht von Bull-Run 1861 zum Brigadekommandeur ernannt, nahm er an der Reorganisation der Potomacarmee unter M'Clellan teil, machte Anfang 1862 eine erfolgreiche Expedition nach Nordcarolina und spielte eine Hauptrolle bei den Unternehmungen, welche die Vertreibung des Generals Lee aus Maryland bezweckten. Bei Antietam, 17. Sept. 1862, führte B. den linken Flügel. Im November übernahm er an M'Clellans Stelle den Oberbefehl. Da der Angriff auf Fredericksburg am Rapahannock im Dezember 1862 verunglückte, übernahm er im Januar 1863 auf dem westlichen Schauplatz wieder ein untergeordnetes Kommando. Im Herbst 1863 nahm er Knoxville ein; seit Sommer 1864 kämpfte er unter Grant in Virginia. Im April 1865 nahm er seinen Abschied; 1866–69 war er Gouverneur von Rhode-Island. Vgl.
