Brace

Brace (spr. brēß), Charles Loring, amerikan. Philanthrop und Schriftsteller, geb. 19. Juni 1826 zu Litchfield in Connecticut, gest. 11. Aug. 1890 zu St. Moritz im Engadin, studierte Theologie in New York, widmete in der Folge alle seine Zeit der Hebung der Armen und Elenden in den Armenhäusern, Hospitälern und Gefängnissen. Nachdem er 1850–51 Europa bereist hatte, gründete er 1853 die Children's Aid Society, als deren Sekretär er lange tätig war. Während seiner Mußezeit hat er noch zahlreiche Reisen unternommen. Unter seinen Schriften sind hervorzuheben: »Hungary in 1851« (1852); »Home life in Germany« (1853); »The Norse-folk, or a visit to the homes of Norway and Sweden« (1857); »The races of the old world« (2. Aufl. 1869); »Short sermons for newsboys« (1865); »The new West, or California in 1867–1868« (1869); »The dangerous classes of New York« (1872); »Gesta Christi, or a history of human progress« (2. Aufl. 1889).
