Bond, 1) William Cranch, Astronom, geb. 9. Sept. 1789 zu Falmouth (jetzt Portland) im Staat Maine, gest. 29. Jan. 1859, erbaute 1838 die neue Sternwarte des Harvard College in Cambridge, entdeckte 16. Sept. 1848 den siebenten Saturntrabanten Hyperion und erfand den ersten elektrischen Chronographen. – Sein Sohn George Phillips, geb. 20. Mai 1825, gest. 17. Febr. 1865, lieferte wertvolle Beobachtungen und Untersuchungen über den Donatischen Kometen und den Orionnebel.

2) Edward Augustus, engl. Gelehrter, Oberbibliothekar des Britischen Museums, geb. 31. Dez. 1813 in Hanwell bei London, gest. 2. Jan. 1898, ward 1838 Assistent im Handschriftendepartement des Britischen Museums, 1854 zweiter, 1866 erster Direktor der Handschriften und 1878 Oberbibliothekar des Britischen Museums; 1888 trat er zurück. Er veröffentlichte unter anderm die »Statutes of the university of Oxford« (1853, 3 Bde.), gab 1856 für die Hakluyt Society Giles Fletchers »Russe commonwealth« und Horseys »Travels in Russia in the 16. century«, ferner 1859–61 die »Speeches in the trial of Warren Hastings« (4 Bde.) und 1866–68 das »Chronicon monasterii de Melsa or Meaux« (3 Bde.) heraus, endlich 1870 einen klassifizierten Katalog der gesamten Handschriftensammlungen des Britischen Museums, dem später ein Verzeichnis aller von 1855 bis 1875 erworbenen Manuskripte und Urkunden mit Index (2 Bde.) sowie 4 Bände Faksimiles wichtiger Dokumente, z. B. der angelsächsischen »Charters«, folgten. Mit E. M. Thomson (seinem Nachfolger) begründete er 1870 die Paläographische Gesellschaft in London, für die er zahlreiche Faksimiles alter Handschriften herausgegeben hat.
