Birbhum (Beerbhoom, eigentlich Wîrabhûmi, »Heroenland«), Distrikt der Division Bardwan in der britisch-ind. Präsidentschaft Bengalen, 4548 qkm und (1891) 797,833 Einw. (3/4 Hindu, 1/5 Proz. Mohammedaner). Das ebene Land wird von unbedeutenden Flüssen durchzogen, hat heiße Quellen, Eisen gruben und Kalkbrüche, starken Reisbau, bedeutende Seidenraupenzucht und -Industrie, B. war über 2000 Jahre der Schauplatz heftiger Kämpfe der von Hindostan aus nach Bengalen vorrückenden Arier, die Erinnerung daran spricht sich im Namen B. aus.
