Yellowstone National Park (spr. jéllo-stōn näschönäl-), ein im nordamerikan. Staat Wyoming, zum Teil auch in Montana und Idaho liegendes Gebiet, nahezu so groß wie das Königreich Sachsen, das durch Kongreßakte von 1872 als öffentlicher Park und Erholungsstätte für das Volk bestimmt wurde.

Er besteht aus einer durchschnittlich 2400 m hohen, flachgewellten Hochebene, durchschnitten von tiefen Tälern und umgeben von den gewaltigen schneebedeckten Teton- und Windriver Ranges, Absaroka Mountains, der Snowy und der Gallatin Range, in die der große Yellowstone Lake, durchflossen vom Yellowstone River (mit dem Großen Cañon), und die kleinern Seen Hart, Shoshone und Lewis, aus denen der Snake River abfließt, tief eingebettet sind. Das ganze Gebiet, in einer verhältnismäßig jungen geologischen Epoche der Schauplatz einer intensiven vulkanischen Tätigkeit, besteht fast ganz aus Rhyolith, das in einer Mächtigkeit von 300 m gewaltigen, von zahlreichen Spalten durchsetzten Kalkschichten ausgelagert ist. Durch diese Spalten treten 5–6000 heiße Quellen, Fumarolen und andre vulkanische Erscheinungen zutage. Besonders merkwürdig sind die 70 Mammoth Hot Springs, die Obsidianfelsen (s. Gläserner Berg), das Norris Geyser Basin, der Fountain Geyser, Mammoth Paint Pots, Great Fountain Geyser (45 m), Excelsior Geyser, der größte von allen (60–90 m), aber seit 1890 nicht mehr tätig, Turquoise Spring, Prismatie Lake mit wunderbarer Färbung, das obere Geiserbecken (40 Geifer), mit dem 35–45 m hoch steigenden Old Faithful, Giant, Gianteß, Castle, Mud Cauldren u. a. (s. Geiser, mit Tafel »Sinterterrasse des Mammutgeisers im Yellowstone Park«). Die an verschiedenen Punkten errichteten Hotels stehen wie die angelegten Kunststraßen (1904: 473 km) und Brücken (125) und der ganze Park unter der Aussicht des Staatssekretärs des Krieges, und im Sommer sind hier Kavallerieabteilungen stationiert. Jagd auf die im Parke befindlichen Tiere, darunter die letzten 600 amerikanischen Büffel, ist nicht erlaubt, wohl aber Angeln. Das untere Geiserbecken wurde zuerst 1863 von Kapitän de Lacy erforscht, das ganze Gebiet 1870 von General Washburne, 1871 von einer Expedition unter Hayden, 1878 von Peale, 1883 von Hague. Vgl.
