Bialystok (Bjelostok), Kreisstadt im russ. Gouv. Grodno, an der Biala, Knotenpunkt an der Eisenbahn Petersburg-Warschau, hat 3 griechische, eine katholische, eine luther. Kirche, 2 Synagogen, ein Realgymnasium, eine Handelsschule, eine Bank und (1897) 63,927 Einw. (viele Juden). B. ist Sitz einer ansehnlichen Industrie, namentlich in Tuch, Seide und Hüten, und treibt lebhaften Handel. – Die ehemalige Provinz B., im alten Podlachien gelegen, das einen Teil des polnischen Reiches ausmachte, wurde 1520 Woiwodschaft, kam 1795 unter preußische Herrschaft und wurde durch den Frieden von Tilsit 1807 russisch, aber 1842 als Provinz aufgehoben.
