Wilkesbarre (spr. ŭilks-), Stadt im nordamerikan. Staate Pennsylvanien, im schönen Wyomingtal und am Susquehanna, der hier schiffbar wird, an mehreren Bahnen, mit Gerichtshof, Gefängnis, Opernhaus, mehreren höhern Schulen, Bibliothek und (1900) 51,721 Einw., die ihren Wohlstand vornehmlich den reichen Anthrazitgruben der Umgebung verdanken und eine rege Industrie (1905: 11,2 Mill. Doll. Produktionswert), besonders in Maschinen und Seide betreiben.
