Tegucigalpa, Hauptstadt (seit 1880) der mittelamerikan. Republik Honduras, am Rio Choluteca, der in den Golf von Fonseca fließt, 1036 m ü. M., in einem von Bergen umgebenen Hochtal, mit schöner Kathedrale, Hochschule, Nationalbank, Münze, lebhaftem Handel mit Vieh und Bergbauprodukten und 15,000 Einw. – Das Departement T., 9000 qkm mit (1901) 81,800 Einw., wovon über drei Viertel Ladinos und über ein Fünftel Indianer, ist ein waldiges Gebirgsland, das Eisen, Kupfer, Silber, Gold und Kohle (früher 16–20 Mill. Mk. jährlich) und in den Tälern Getreide und Obst liefert.
