Story, 1) Joseph, nordamerikan. Staatsmann und Rechtsgelehrter, geb. 18. Sept. 1779 in Marblehead bei Boston, gest. 10. Sept. 1845 in Cambridge, ward als Advokat in seiner Vaterstadt 1805 in das Unterhaus von Massachusetts gewählt, 1811 zum Richter am Bundesgerichtshof berufen und 1829 zum Professor der Rechte an der Harvard-Universität zu Cambridge bei Boston ernannt. Als solcher hatte er über Naturrecht, Völkerrecht, See- und Handelsrecht, Billigkeitsrecht und Staatsrecht der Vereinigten Staaten zu lesen und verfaßte über fast alle diese Disziplinen Lehrbücher, die auch in England für klassisch gelten. Das für Deutschland bedeutendste unter diesen Werken sind die »Commentaries on the constitution of the United States« (5. Aufl. von Bigelow, Boston 1891, 2 Bde.; deutsch im Auszug, Leipz. 1838). Seine »Miscellaneous writings, literary, critical, juridical and political« erschienen Boston 1835. Vgl. W. Story, Life and letters of J. S. (Lond. 1851).

2) William Wetmore, amerikan. Bildhauer und Schriftsteller, Sohn des vorigen, geb. 12. Febr. 1819 in Salem (Mass.), gest. 3. Okt. 1895 in Vallombrosa bei Florenz, wandte sich nach kurzer Rechtspraxis der Kunst und Literatur zu und wohnte seit 1848 in Rom, später in Florenz. Seine Statuen zeichnen sich durch Größe der Auffassung und durch meisterhafte Marmorbehandlung aus und sind teils Idealgestalten, teils Porträtstatuen. Am bedeutendsten sind Kleopatra, Medea, Sappho, Judith, Moses und eine Sibylle, am bekanntesten die Statuen seines Vaters, Edward Everetts und das Nationaldenkmal in Philadelphia. Von seinen poetischen Schriften sind zu nennen: »Poems« (1847), »Grafitti d'Italia« (1868), die Novelle »Fiametta« (1885), das Drama »Nero« (1875), »He and She« (1883), »A poet's portfolio« (1885), ferner: »Conversations in a studio«, ästhetisch-kritische Plaudereien und Essays (1890), und »Excursions in art and letters« (1891). Gesammelte Dichtungen erschienen in 2 Bänden (Boston 1886). Vgl. H. James, W. W. S. and his friends (Boston 1903, 2 Bde.).
