Stephen (spr. ßtīw'n), 1) James Fitzjames, Baronet, Jurist, geb. 3. März 1829 in London, gest. 11. März 1894 in Ipswich, war erst Advokat, dann 1869 bis 1872 Justizminister im indischen Ministerium, 1879–91 Richter am High Court of justice. Er hat sich besondere Verdienste um die Reform der indischen Gesetzgebung erworben und schrieb unter anderm: »A general view of the criminal law of England« (Lond. 1863, 2. Aufl. 1890); »Liberty, equality and fraternity« (das. 1873; 2. Aufl. 1874; deutsch von Schuster, Berl. 1874); »Digest of the criminal law« (Lond. 1877, 6. Aufl. 1904); »History of the criminal law of England« (das. 1883, 3 Bde.); »Digest of law of criminal procedure« (mit H. Stephen, das. 1883); »Digest of law of evidence« (das. 1876; 6. 2) Leslie, engl. Kritiker und Philosoph, Bruder des vorigen, geb. 28. Nov. 1832 in Kensington, gest. 22. Febr. 1904, studierte in Cambridge, verblieb hier bis 1864 als Fellow und Tutor der Trinity Hall, siedelte darauf nach London über, wo er 1871–82 das »Cornhill Magazine« herausgab. Von 1882–1891 war er Leiter des umfangreichen »Dictionary of national biography«, von dem er die ersten 26 Bände redigierte. Die Professur der englischen Literatur am Trinity College in Cambridge, zu der er 1833 berufen ward, legte er schon nach einem Jahre wieder nieder. Er schrieb: »Hours in a library« (1874–79, 3 Tle.; neue Ausg. 1892); »History of English thought in the XVIII. century« (1876, 2 Bde.; 3. Aufl. 1902); »Essays on freethinking and plain-speaking« (1379); »Science of ethics« (1882); »The life of Henry Fawcett« (1885); »An Agnostic's apology« (1893, 2. Aufl. 1903); »Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen« (1895); »Social rights and duties« (1896, 2 Bde.); »Studies of a biographer« (1898–1902, 4 Bde.); »The English Utilitarians« (1900, 3 Bde.); »The English literature and society in XVIII. century« (1904). Auch gab er die Werke Fieldings (1882, 10 Bde., mit Biographie) und die »Letters of J. R. Green« (1901) heraus und bearbeitete für »English men of letters« die Biographien von S. Johnson (1878), A. Pope (1880), J. Swift (1882), George Eliot (1902) und Hobbes (1904). Als Vorstand des Londoner Alpenklubs veröffentlichte er das Werk »The playground of Europe« (1871, neue Ausg. 1899). Vgl.
