Beard

Beard (spr. bīrd), Georg Miller, Mediziner, geb. 8. Mai 1839 zu Montville in Connecticut, gest. 23. Jan. 1883 in New York, studierte im Yale College und praktizierte seit 1866 in New York. Hier widmete er sich den Nervenkrankheiten, hielt seit 1868 an der Universität Vorlesungen und begann 1873 seine Studien über die Psychologie und Pathologie des tierischen Magnetismus, des Hellsehens, des Spiritismus etc. Er schrieb: »Practical treatise on the medical and surgical uses of electricity« (mit Rockwell, 1867; 8. Aufl. 1892; neue Bearbeitung unter Rockwells Namen, 1896); »Our home physician« (1869, neue Ausg. 1883); »Eating and drinking« (1871); »Stimulants and narcotics« (1871); »Hay fever or summer catarrh« (1876); »The scientific basis of delusions« (1877); »The psychology of spiritism« (1878); »Problems of insanity« (1880); »Practical treatise on nervous exhaustion, neurasthenia« (1880, neue Ausg. von Rockwell 1890; deutsch, 3. Aufl., Leipz. 1889); »Seasickness« (1880, neue Ausg. 1882); »American nervousness« (1881); »Sexual neurasthenia« (aus dem Nachlaß, 1884; deutsch, Leipz. 1885).
