Sistrum

Sistrum (ägypt. seschschet), Musikinstrument altägyptischer Frauen, das aus einem metallenen, in ovale Form gebogenen Reisen mit einem Stiel besteht. Mitten durch den Reisen gehen metallene Stäbe, die in Löchern leicht sich hin und her bewegen und dadurch ein klapperndes Geräusch hervorbringen. Der Stiel ist meist mit einem Kopf der Hathor, seltener des Gottes Bes geschmückt; auf dem S. liegt oft eine Katze, das heilige Tier der Bubastis, der Göttin der Freude. Das S. wurde auch in Rom beim Isiskultus verwendet. S. Abbildung.
