Bath, 1) Stadt (municipal borough) und Grafschaft im südwestlichen England, am schiffbaren Avon, den neun Brücken überspannen. Unten im Tale liegen die gotische Abteikirche (1499–1616 erbaut, 1875 restauriert) mit 50 m hohem Turm, die neue katholische St. Johanniskirche, der Kursaal (Pump Rooms, 1796 erbaut), mehrere Badeanstalten, von denen das Königsbad aus einem Römerbad, dessen Überreste 1881 aufgedeckt wurden, entstanden ist, 2 Hospitäler für arme Badegäste, das Rathaus (Guildhall, ein schöner klassischer Bau, 1765 errichtet), das Museum (mit Altertümern etc.) und die dem Handei gewidmeten Gebäude, während ringsum an den Hügelabhängen stattliche Wohnhäuser amphitheatralisch ansteigen. Mit seinen vielen weißen Steinbauten und einer reizenden Umgebung ist B. eine der schönsten Städte Englands. Es ist nicht mehr wie im 18. Jahrh. ein Sammelplatz der eleganten Welt, und die von Wood und Beau Nash ins Leben gerufenen Prachtbauten tragen Spuren der Vernachlässigung. Immerhin wird es jährlich noch von 25,000 Badegästen besucht. Die sechs heißen Quellen von 40–49° sind gegen Rheumatismus, Gicht, Frauenkrankheiten etc. wirksam. Die Zahl der Einwohner beträgt (1901) 49,817 gegen 54,240 im J. 1851. Privatschulen sind zahlreich, und die Katholiken haben zwei Colleges. Im W. der Stadt liegt der schöne Victoriapark, im O. die Sydneygärten, im N. der Hügel Lansdown (s. d.). Die heißen Quellen waren schon den Römern als Aquae Solis bekannt. B. ist der Geburtsort des Polarreisenden Parry und gehörte bis 1888 zur Grafschaft Somerset. Vgl. E. Barlow, City of B. (Lond. 1868), Freeman, The thermal baths of B. Staat Maine, am Kennebec (der hier 823 m breit und 15 m tief ist), 20 km vom Meer, mit Schiffbau, Gießereien, Eis- und Holzausfuhr und (1900) 10,477 Einw. – 3) Seebad im SW. der Insel Long Island, dem Stadtgebiet von New York einverleibt.
