Schenectady

Schenectady (spr. ßkĕnécktĕdì), Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Grafschaft im nordamerikan. Staate New York, am Mohawkfluß und Eriekanal, Bahnknotenpunkt, altertümliche Stadt, hat eine 1795 gegründete Hochschule (Union College), die großartigen Werkstätten der General Electric Company (60 Mill. Doll. Kapital), Maschinen- und Ackergerätefabriken, Handel mit Hopfen, Butter etc. und (1900) 31,682 Einw. S. wurde 1620 von den Holländern gegründet.
