San Salvadŏr, 1) Hauptstadt der mittelamerikan. Republik Salvador, 667 m ü. M., am Südostfuß des 1270 m hohen erloschenen Vulkans von S., durch Bahn mit dem Hafen La Libertad verbunden, ist Sitz eines Bischofs und eines deutschen Konsuls, mit Kathedrale und Theater, beide aus Holz gebaut, Präsidentschaftspalast, Nationalpalast, Universität, Seminar, höherer Töchterschule, Hospital, umfangreichem Kaffee- und Indigohandel und (1901) 59,544 Ein w. Die Stadt wurde 1508 auf der Stelle des alten Cucutlan erbaut, 16. April 1854 durch ein Erdbeben zerstört und mit dem neuerbauten Nueva S., 20 km im SW., vertauscht, aber 1858 wieder aufgebaut, litt jedoch 1872 und 1879 wiederum durch Erdbeben. – 2) (Sāo Salvador) Hauptstadt des ehemaligen Negerreichs Kongo (s. d., S. 370).
