Samurai

Samurai, in Japan das militärische Gefolge der Daimyo (s. d.). Sie bildeten, 400,000 an der Zahl, einen erblichen Stand und hatten das Vorrecht, zwei Schwerter zu tragen. Nach der Restauration wurde ihnen dies Vorrecht genommen und ihre Pensionen wurden durch einmalige Abschlagszahlung getilgt; sie heißen seit 1878 Shizoku. Zu diesem japanischen Ritterstande gehörten auch die Hatamato, die S. der Tokugawa-Schogune. Neuerdings wird versucht, den Ehrenkodex der S. »Buschido« (d.h. Weg der Krieger) als nationale Ethik der Japaner in Geltung zu bringen (s. Yamato damash). Vgl. Rônin.
