Saint-Maixent

Saint-Maixent (spr. ßäng-mäkßāng oder mäßāng), Stadt im franz. Depart. Deux-Sèvres, Arrond. Niort, an der Sévre Niortaise, Knotenpunkt an der Linie Poitiers-La Rochelle der Staatsbahnen, hat eine ehemalige Abteikirche aus dem 12.–15. Jahrh., nach der Zerstörung durch die Hugenotten (1565) im 17. Jahrh. im gotischen Stile wiederhergestellt, eine prot. Konsistorialkirche mit alter Krypte, ein Collège, eine Infanterieoffizierschule, eine Gewerbekammer, Wollspinnerei, Fabrikation von Wirkwaren etc. und (1901) 4870 Einw. S. ist Geburtsort Denfert-Rochéreaus, dem hier ein Denkmal errichtet worden ist.
