Rosecrans

Rosecrans, William Starke, nordamerikan. General, geb. 6. Sept. 1819 in Kingston (Ohio), gest. im März 1898 in Los Angeles, trat 1842 in das Geniekorps, ließ sich aber 1854 als Zivilingenieur in Cincinnati nieder. 1861 zum Obersten eines Ohioregiments ernannt, begleitete er Mac Clellan nach Westvirginia. Im Treffen von Rich-Mountain (11. Juli 1861) nahm er die feindlichen Verschanzungen und ward dafür zum Brigadegeneral befördert. Als Oberkommandant der Armee von Westvirginia schlug er 10. Sept. die Sezessionisten bei Summersville. Im Juli 1862 an den Mississippi versetzt, besiegte er 31. Dez. d. J. die Konföderierten unter Bragg bei Murfreesborough, erlitt aber am Chicamauga 19. und 20. Sept. eine Niederlage, infolge deren er nach Chattanooga zurückkehren mußte und durch General Thomas abgelöst ward. 1864 wurde er Chef des Missouridepartements, schied aber 1866 gänzlich aus der Armee, ward 1868 Gesandter in Mexiko, aber von Grant bald wieder abberufen. Hierauf widmete er sich technischen Arbeiten, saß von 1881–85 als demokratisches Mitglied für Kalifornien im Kongreß und wurde 1885 zum Registrator des Bundesschatzamtes ernannt.
