Roscellīnus

Roscellīnus (Rousselin), Johannes, Scholastiker, geb. um 1050 in der Niederbretagne (Todesjahr unbekannt), studierte in Soissons und Reims, lehrte in Tours und Locmenach in der Bretagne und ward Kanonikus zu Compiègne und später in Besançon. Er war Lehrer Abälards und soll zuerst die schon im 9. Jahrh. von dem Mönch Eric von Auxerre, wenn auch nicht ganz klar, ausgesprochene Lehre des Nominalismus (s. d.), daß die allgemeinen Begriffe (universalia) nicht in Wirklichkeit (in re) existierten, sondern bloße Namen (nomina) oder Worte (flatus vocis) seien, aufgestellt und daraus gefolgert haben, daß die dreigöttlichen Personen zwar unter denselben Begriff (nomen) fallen, aber nicht in Wirklichkeit eins seien (Tritheismus). Auf der Kirchenversammlung von Soissons (1092) als Ketzer verurteilt und zum Widerruf gezwungen, mußte er sein Kanonikat niederlegen, begab sich nach England, kehrte aber später nach Frankreich zurück.
