Bantam, niederländ. Residentschaft auf Westjava, mit den Inseln der Sundastraße 7906 qkm. Der nördliche Teil ist eine Ebene, auf die südlich das urwaldbedeckte Hügelland Kandang folgt. Die vulkanischen Kegel Karang (1900 m) und Pulasari (1275 m) sind längst erloschen. Das Klima ist ungesund, der Boden fruchtbar. Die Bewohner (1895: 699,185, wovon 286 Europäer und 1873 Chinesen) sind Sundanesen, die sich in Sprache und Sitte von den Javanen unterscheiden. Zu ihnen gehören die Baduwi, die vor dem Islam in entlegene Teile des Kandang flohen und sich hier eine gewisse Selbständigkeit und Freiheit ihrer Religion bewahrten. Früher baute man vornehmlich Pfeffer, jetzt Reis, und treibt Viehzucht und Fischfang und beträchtlichen Handel mit Batavia. Hauptstadt ist Serang im Innern. An der Sundastraße liegen Andscher (s. d.) und B., frühere Hauptstadt und weltberühmter Handelsplatz, jetzt verfallen. – An der Stelle des Hindureiches Padjadjaran wurde 1443 das islamitische Sultanat B. errichtet, mit dem später die Portugiesen, Holländer und Briten Handelsverträge abschlossen. Die Holländer verlegten ihre Faktorei 1610 nach Dschakatra (später Batavia). Das Sultanat ging 1813 ein.
