Reade

Reade

Reade (spr. rīd, 1) Charles, engl. Romanschriftsteller, geb. 1814, studierte in Oxford, wurde 1843 Advokat und starb 11. April 1884. It is never too late to mend« (1857). Von seinen übrigen Romanen seien erwähnt: »Jack of all trades, autobiography of a thief« (1858); »The cloister and the heart« (1861); »Griffith Gaunt« (1866); »A simpleton« (1873); »The woman hater« (1877). Vgl. Charles und Compton Reade, Memoir of Charles R. (Lond. 1887); Coleman, Charles R. as I knew him (das. 1903).

2) William Winwood, engl. Afrikareisender und Schriftsteller, geb. 26. Dez. 1838 zu Murrayfield in Schottland, gest. 24. 1864), »The African sketchbook« (1873, 2 Bde.), »The story of the Ashantee campaign« (1874) und »The martyrdom of man« (1872, 17. Aufl. 1903).
