Rankine

Rankine (spr. ränkin), William John Macquorn, Ingenieur, geb. 5. Juli 1820 in Edinburg, gest. 24. Dez. 1872, studierte in Edinburg, lehrte mehrere Jahre in Glasgow und arbeitete über die Wärme und die Theorie der Motoren, die Erhaltung der Kraft und über das Licht. Er schrieb: »Manual of applied mechanics« (Lond. 1858, 17. Aufl. 1904); »Manual of the steam-engine and other prime movers« (1859, 14. Aufl. 1897); »Manual of civil engineering« (1832, 22. Aufl. 1904; deutsch von Kreuter, Wien 1880); »Mechanical text-book. Introduction to study of mechanics« (5. Aufl. 1900); »Useful rules and tables« (1867, 6. Aufl. 1882); »Shipbuilding« (1869); »Manual of machinery and millwork« (1874–79, 7. Aufl. 1887); »Miscellaneous scientific papers« (1880).
