Punta Arēnas, 1) (Puntarenas) Haupthafen der mittelamerikan. Republik Costarica, am Stillen Ozean, an der Spitze einer sandigen Landzunge, im O. des Golfes von Nicoya, mit heißem, ungesundem Klima, Ausgangspunkt der noch unfertigen Überlandbahn nach Puerto Limon am Karibischen Meere, Station mehrerer Dampferlinien, ist Sitz eines deutschen Vizekonsuls, hat Ausfuhr von Kaffee, Kautschuk, Bananen, Häuten, Farbhölzern, Schildpatt, Silber und 2700 Einw. 1904 liefen 88 Schiffe mit 165,231 Ton. ein. P. wurde 1840 als Ersatz für das ungesunde Calderas, den frühern Einfuhrhafen, angelegt. – 2) (Villa de Punta) Hauptort des chilen. Territoriums Magallanes, an der Magalhãesstraße an der Ostküste der Halbinsel Brunswick, die in einer Sandbank endigt (daher der Name »sandige Spitze«), unter 53°10' südl. Br., war bis 1877 nur Verbannungsort, hat einen gegen Ost- und Südostwinde offenen Hafen, so daß Schiffe bisweilen nicht löschen können, ist seit 1880 Freihafen, Sitz eines deutschen Konsuls, hat starken Schiffsverkehr (1893 liefen 219 Schiffe von 361,618 Ton. ein, darunter die von zwei deutschen Dampferlinien) und angeblich 10,000 Einw. verschiedenster Nationalität. Die Umgegend ist reich an schönen Wäldern, deren Holz nach den Falklandinseln ausgeführt wird, und erzeugt Roggen, Gerste, Erbsen, Kartoffeln, Kohl. Aus dem Innern bringen die Indianer Pelzwerk, das ebenso wie Wolle, Gold, Robbenfelle und Straußfedern ausgeführt wird.
