Puërto Montt

Puërto Montt (früher Melipulli), Hauptstadt der chilen. Provinz Llanquíhue, unter 41°29' südl. Br., am Golf von Reloncavi, hat ein sehr gleichmäßiges, aber feuchtes Klima, ist Sitz eines deutschen Vizekonsuls, einer meteorologischen Station, Garnison eines Bataillons der Nationalgarde, beliebter Badeort, hat ein Hospital, Waisenhaus, Lyzeum, Jesuitenkloster mit höherer Schule, Bibliothek und 3000 Einw., darunter viele Deutsche, die hier eine eigne prot. Kirche und Schule haben und in der Industrie (Gerberei, Branntweinbrennerei, Brauerei. Fabrik von Mineralwassern) und dem steigenden Handel eine hervorragende Rolle spielen. Ausgeführt werden Honig und Wachs, Bauholz, Bretter, Butter, Sohlleder. In der Umgegend liegen mehrere deutsche Kolonien.
