Porto Alēgre (Portalegre), Hauptstadt des brasil. Staates Rio Grande do Sul in Südbrasilien, unter 30°2' südl. Br., liegt amphitheatralisch auf einer Landzunge an der Mündung der Guaiba in die Lagoa dos Patos, hat eine Kathedrale, Munizipalgebäude, Theater, Gefängnis, Arsenal, Hospital, Lyzeum, bischöfliches Seminar, Lehrerseminar, Militärschule, mehrere deutsche Kirchen, Volksbildungsanstalten und Bibliotheken, ist Sitz eines Gerichtshofs, Bischofs und deutschen Berufskonsuls und hat über 80,000 Einw., darunter 25,000 Deutsche, die namentlich den wohlhabenden Kaufmanns-, Fabrikanten- und Handweckerstand vertreten. Die Industrie (Sägemühle mit Stuhlfabrik, Pianofortefabrik, Brauerei, Brennerei) ist im Aufschwung, der durch die 1857 gegründete Banco do Rio Grande do Sul gestützte Handel bringt namentlich Häute, Tabak, Haare und Wolle, Lebensmittel und Maté zur Ausfuhr. Der Hafen mit Molo und Schiffswerften ist trotz der Barre des Rio Grande für Schiffe von 2,6 m Tiefgang erreichbar; Dampfer verbinden die Stadt auf der Lagoa dos Patos mit Rio Grande und auf dem Rio dos Sinos mit São Leopoldo u. a.
