Popayán, Hauptstadt des kolumb. Depart. Cáuca, 5 km links vom Rio Cáuca, 1741 m ü. M., in sehr fruchtbarer Gegend, ist Bischofssitz, Sitz eines deutschen Konsuls und hat eine Kathedrale, 3 Klöster, ein Colegio universitario, Lehrerseminar, Hospital, Fabrikation von Wollenzeugen, Handel mit den Erzeugnissen seiner Umgebung und (1902) 18,000 Einw. – Die 1536 von den Spaniern gegründete Stadt gelangte durch die Goldminen ihrer Umgebung und als Stapelplatz an der Handelsstraße zwischen Quito und dem Magdalenenstrom zu hoher Blüte, ist aber durch den Verfall des Bergbaues, Bürgerkriege und Erdbeben herabgekommen.
