Pirot, Kreishauptstadt im Königreich Serbien, 376 m ü. M., an der Nischawa und der Staatsbahnlinie Nisch-Zaribrod, mit 2 Kirchen, Gymnasium, blühender Filigran-, Teppich- und Webindustrie und (1900) 10,395 Einw. Der Kreis P. umfaßt 2419 qkm (43,9 QM.) mit (1903) 101,776 Einw. (42 auf 1 qkm). – Im 4. Jahrh. war hier angeblich die römische Station Turres; im 11. erwähnt der arabische Geograph Edrisi eine Stadt Atrunia. Erst im 14. Jahrh. taucht der jetzige Name auf. Die Türken nannten P. Schartschoj. 1443 wurde P. von dem serbischen Despoten Georg Branković (s. d.) erobert und 16. Dez. 1877 von den serbischen Truppen besetzt. Im serbisch-bulgarischen Krieg 1885 wurden die Serben 27. und 28. Nov. bei P. vom Fürsten Alexander (s. Hartenau) geschlagen.
