Pickering, Edward Charles, Astronom, geb. 19. Juli 1846 in Boston, studierte in Cambridge, wurde 1867 Professor der Physik an der Technischen Hochschule in Boston, 1877 Professor der Astronomie in Cambridge und Direktor der Harvard-Sternwarte daselbst, die unter seiner Direktion eine ganz hervorragende Entwickelung genommen hat und eine Filialsternwarte in Kalifornien und eine in Arequipa (Peru) errichtete. Seine zahlreichen Arbeiten betreffen die verschiedensten Gebiete der Astronomie, besonders hervorzuheben ist seine Bestimmung der Helligkeit von 25,000 Fixsternen und von den Satelliten des Jupiter, Mars, Neptun und Uranus. Seit 1882 wandte er sich der Astrophotographie zu und bestimmte die Örter der Gestirne und die Spektra von mehr als 10,000 Sternen. Seine Arbeiten veröffentlichte er in den von ihm herausgegebenen »Annals of the Harvard College Observatory« (bis 1905: 52 Bde.).
